2. Wärmer als andere Wolle

Auf den ersten Blick mag man meinen, dass ein so feines Material nicht wärmen kann – aber das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Kaschmirziegen leben in extrem kalten Klimazonen und haben kaum Unterhautfett. Um sich zu schützen, entwickeln sie eine dichte, isolierende Unterwolle.

Daher verfügt Kaschmir über hervorragende Wärmeeigenschaften im Verhältnis zu seinem Gewicht und isoliert oft besser als herkömmliche Wolle. Das bedeutet: Ein dünner Kaschmirpullover kann dich genauso – oder sogar besser – wärmen als ein grob gestrickter Wollpullover, bietet dabei aber ein deutlich leichteres Tragegefühl.

3. Form- und farbbeständig

Synthetische Materialien sind heute weit verbreitet – vor allem wegen der geringen Kosten. Mit modernen Verfahren versucht man, die Eigenschaften von Wolle zu imitieren – doch das Ergebnis ist oft ein Kompromiss. Synthetik neigt dazu, sich auszudehnen, die Form zu verlieren und stark zu noppen.

Kaschmir hingegen behält seine Form, Weichheit und seinen Glanz viel länger – auch im Vergleich zu klassischer Wolle. Die Fasern sind feiner und länger, was beim Spinnen zu einem dichteren, gleichmäßigeren Garn führt. Dadurch bleibt die Passform des Kleidungsstücks auch nach vielen Tragen erhalten.

4. Weniger Pilling(Noppenbildung)

Alle Strickwaren aus Wolle können mit der Zeit Pilling entwickeln – auch Kaschmir. Doch die Qualität zeigt sich darin, wie das Material mit Knötchen umgeht: Die langen, feinen und glatten Fasern von Kaschmir führen zu weniger und lockereren Knötchen als bei synthetischen oder groben Wollprodukten. Zudem lassen sich Pillingreste bei Kaschmir ganz einfach mit einem Wollkamm oder Fusselrasierer entfernen – ohne das Material zu beschädigen

5. Natürlicher Luxus

Kaschmir ist ein exklusives Material – selten und aufwendig in der Gewinnung. Es braucht die Wolle mehrerer Kaschmirziegen, um nur einen einzigen Pullover herzustellen. Und da die Fasern nur in einem kurzen Zeitraum im Jahr gesammelt werden können, ist das Angebot naturgemäß begrenzt.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Materialien lässt sich Kaschmir nicht in großen Mengen industriell produzieren. Hochwertiger Kaschmir wird in kleinen Chargen gefertigt – mit viel Handarbeit in jedem Schritt. Das ist einer der Gründe, warum Kaschmir nicht an Wert verliert und auch auf dem Secondhandmarkt sehr geschätzt wird.

Wichtig zu wissen:

Nicht jeder Kaschmir ist gleich. Da das Material selten und teuer ist, variiert die Qualität stark – je nachdem, wie die Fasern gewonnen und verarbeitet werden. Die hochwertigste Kaschmirwolle wird traditionell im Frühjahr aus dem Fell der Ziege ausgekämmt. Günstigere Varianten hingegen stammen oft von am Boden gesammelten Restfasern oder aus dem groben Deckhaar – was zu weniger haltbaren, gröberen Fasern führt. Solche Pullover erreichen weder dieselbe Weichheit noch denselben Glanz oder dieselbe Strapazierfähigkeit.

French tennis star René Lacoste found the traditional tennis attire of the time – long-sleeved shirts and ties paired with full-length trousers – impractical for the game. The result was a short-sleeved cotton shirt made from piqué knit – a breathable, durable fabric that was quickly embraced. When Lacoste later adorned the garment with his now-famous crocodile logo – an homage to his nickname – the polo shirt not only had its practical form, but its iconic status as well.

The boat shoe, as the name suggests, has its roots in the maritime world. Were it not for an event that occurred nearly a hundred years ago, we might never have known the distinctive model that has become a timeless classic in every man’s wardrobe.

The History Behind the Boat Shoe

The multi-talented sailor Paul Sperry is now known as the founder of the Sperry boat shoe, but the road there was not entirely smooth. During one of his many sailing trips in the 1930s, he was defeated by his leather sole, slipping and falling off his sailboat. It was not only a soaked sailor who climbed back on deck – he also carried with him an idea and a conviction that there must be a way to move around on the boat without risking falling overboard.

However, it proved difficult to find a shoe or sole suited to the task. Despite various attempts, no sole could provide grip on both dry and wet surfaces. After an intense period – during which history claims Paul tested hundreds of different types of rubber – the idea came to him through his dog. Watching his Cocker Spaniel’s remarkable grip on all kinds of surfaces, including the boat’s deck, he was fascinated and had to inspect these boat-compatible paws. The asymmetrical pattern and texture of the paws created friction that prevented slipping – something that could absolutely be used on a shoe sole. Paul developed a prototype, and thus the boat shoe was born.

From the Sailboat Deck to Ivy League 

With its characteristic lacing running around the heel and a classic white sole designed not to leave black marks on the deck, the shoe was early on adopted by sailors. It wasn’t long before the model was embraced by the U.S. Navy. Until then, the shoe was entirely designed for and used in sailing. It would be several years before the now-classic model entered the style of the everyday man. It was not until the 1960s that sailing college students began wearing their boat shoes off the boats, filling campuses with the style and establishing it as part of the preppy tradition of America’s East Coast Ivy League schools.

When The Official Preppy Handbook landed in bookshops in 1980, it quickly became a cult guide to a world that had previously been viewed mostly from the outside. Mixing humour with seriousness, it led readers through the preppy universe – from style tips to guides on sports and leisure activities. The cover featured none other than the boat shoe, which soon established itself as a definitive symbol of both the style and the subculture. As the classic look experienced a revival during the 1980s, the boat shoe rose as a timeless icon – a role it continues to hold today.
