The ”ugly christmas sweater” have become a popular feature of the 21st century, but their history dates back to the 1950s. Back then they were called ”Jingle Bell Sweaters” and were long-sleeved sweaters decorated with christmas Motifs such as elves, snowmen, angels and snowflakes. Just like ties, hats and gloves, these sweaters became a way to express christmas spirit through fashion. 

Today, the ”ugly” christmas sweaters have received a humorous twist and are an obvious part of the christmas celebration (for some) –  especially at themed parties where the rule usually reads: the uglier and more christmas themed sweater, the better.
